Port attacked and destroyed morning of March 5, 1942 by waves of bombers and bombers, much like the "German Stukas, of vivid and unhappy memory" Trucked to Poerwokerto ten boarded train. Men turned in weapons before boarding and then train was later ambushed by Japs. Captured on 8th. Taken via circuitous route and small camps back to major POW camp in Tjilatjap. Some Perth survivors brought in a few weeks later- had tried to "sail" to Australia and sailed right into T'jap. Ray Parkin was one of these men. End of May to Bandoeng (Malay name: Tjikoedapateuh) Col Weary Dunlop in this camp. Departed with detail toSingapore. Col Van der Post in charge now of camp. Donald Gregory departs camp in July 1943 for Batavia via transit camp at Tjimahi. At Batavia placed on MACASSAR MARU to Singapore.-paraded thru Singapore-marched to Changi. Matui Maru to Saigon then to Takao (senior Brit officers removed at Taiwan) to Shimonoseki. Jan 1945- all punished - limited to one blanket for month because someone had stolen Red Cross parcel of food from warehouse. Said to have changed name and deserted whilst in transit home after rescue in 1945. Ikuno- March 1945- pyrite mine of Mitsubishi family.- camp already occupied by Hong Kong Brits and Yanks from Philippines. Pg 66: "One day, when I was standing near the guard house in the company of a Japanese guard, a woman trudged by bearing on her bent back what looked like a huge log. when I asked the guard if the woman, whom he had greeted, was carrying the wood home to burn, he explained that the wood was rotten and therefore full of small creatures, which the woman could cook for her family. There were other signs too of real poverty thereabouts. Many of the childen I saw had the sort of bow legs generally associated with rickets." Thence truck to Kanchanaburi- then by launch (pom-poms) to Chungkai. his party of 50 was attached to #2 Bn and joined a party of Ordnance men already working on enbankment and cut thru hill.- thence to Wun Lung, about 7 or 8 kilos distant. Men suffered dengue fever- he had 4 times in a row. Name: Corporal Wilson- got malaria & Dysentery so bad- returned to Chungkai and died. Next camp- a "few kilometers up the line" to Wun Yeng. The 24 Kilo to Takilin. Next camp was about 5 kilo called Nombrudai where he met first Dutch then back to Takilin. Next camp was Wan Po to build huge viaduct across face of cliff. Next to Tarso (mostly Aussies already there) then after 10 days walked to Takinoon leaving sick behind. Camp known as 211 camp. Lots of leg amputations and breakout of cholera. 15 December- sick- sent down to Chungkai. 9 Jun 1944- train to Singapore arriving on 14th- sent to Havelock Road. After 10-12 days, boarded the "Hofuru" Maru (Hofuku Maru).- departed first week of July- Borneo (Miri) trouble with engines. Slow voyage to Manila. While in Manila, "some 94 men died and were buried at sea. Another 150 or so had no will to live." Departed on 19 Sep. Rescued by Jap patrol boats which were also stafed on way back to Manila- several POWs died here also.- arrived Manila on 23 Sep- 220 survived out of 1300 men on sunken ship. Others had earlier been left off as sick in Manila. After one week, Japs wanted 150 Brits to join shipment of Yanks to Taiwan. He called this the "Senmaru". About 1100 men total- boarded on 1 October. Arrived Hong Kong on 11 Oct. Bombed and stafed- no casualties. Departed 21 Oct for Takau in Taiwan- arrived 24 October- train to "Imrun". Says food prepared by LIMEYS FROM HONG KONG! Departed 10 Jan on Melbourne Maru Names: Capt Dean and Lt Lawrence who were on "Senmaru" earlier- rejoined for voyage of Melbourne. Landed Moji on 23rd. Jap Medic: Sgt TANAGUCHI- humane as possible. Departed May 1943- sent to Kashi about 15 hours by train- stayed about 10 months- none died here. (301 men in camp) Jap Medic: Dr Myergowa- excellent- provided much medicine & supplies when army took over from Mitsubishi. Late June 1944- moved by foot- rough huts with straw roofs (Mushiroda Camp). Met first civilians from Wake Island. Forced to work mines- 28 men died in next two months. Moved to another camp: in Fukuoka- on coast with fighter base on one side and bomber base on other; main railway 50 yards away and a river on the east side. Says he was then placed back on a ship called "Singapore Maru- 7 deaths before Takao, Taiwan- no names. 100 more dead on arrival plus some 100 sick perished in next month at Moji. He estimates overall 350 of the 1100 men died as a result by two months later. At UBE, 10 men died as result of voyage- clean rooms, bath and hot meal of stew on arrival- 160 ranks and 14 officers. JULY 1943: 7 officers moved to Zentsuji. June 1945- party of 46 sent to Fuk-09-Miyata- occupied by Dutch- cruel commandant who was dying. Absolutely vicious. Originally 450 Dutch sailors now has 46 Yanks, 150 Brit, 11 Aussie plus 100 Brit officers who just came up from Taiwan before Powlett. 7 Aug 1945: Brit officers harranged for over hour with hands above head- beaten if slack; then made to assume push up position as guards and commandant beat them with bats and staves.
