Note the flags at the entrance to the gate. These were handmade from materials in the camp and from dyed parachutes. POW Abel Ortega took the different colored parachutes that were used to drop the 55 gallon containers from American B-29 Bombers and had the flags made by a local Japanese tailor. Ortega was the camp artist and was put in charge of drawing the different flag designs from the British, Dutch, & Australians. After he finished the drawings, he took the colored parachutes and designs to the tailor so he could make the flags. Ortega gave the tailor 3 days to make them. On the 3rd day, he brought them back and that's when they had the ceremony.
