Summary of my (R. Mansell) research notes regarding Futase POW Camp

Affidavit: Harry F. Douthit, Plt Sgt, 280452, USMC, Dalles, OR:
Located central Kyushu on old slag dump. Mines were called Honko and Shinko- power plant with 4 stacks- first occupied by Dutch; Mentions Dr Varshaw, USA; PhM1c Locklear, USN and Max Stearmer, San Louis Colorado; Lt Col Roscoe Price was camp CO- started with about 200 Yanks, cut down to some 186, 2 Brits and 350 Dutch. One barrack was 50 x 120 ft, other was "U" Shape 40 x 120 Ft- approx 3 acre compound

Letter: Lt Col Sidney Vernon, MC- 803rd Eng Bn- nothing significant

Affidavit: Cpl Andrew Rees Calvin, USMC, 273615, Denver Co- witnessed beating of PFC Gould, USMC- extreme severity- Calvin arrived Aug 1944

Affidavit of Sgt John Lester Brooke, 19013274 CAC, Richmond CA- has sketch of camp- Fuku_10_layout_1 (PIC)- Ask Center for scan if desired
Affidavit of QM Sgt Robt L. Coley, 275914, Tyler TX says 200 yanks- 26 Army, 84 Navy, 100 Marines [2 Brits were Merchant armed guards]
2 Brits, 350 Dutch & said Lt Seijiro Yoshisugu was worst man he ever encountered

Affidavit: Sgt Harold Trummer, USMC, 205510, sent from PI to Futase (#10)- other Marines: Cpl Lester L. Weatherman (19003070), Cpl Murray A. Waller, Sgt Franklin Boyer.
Affidavit : PhM2c Thomas Eulee Locklear, USN, 2720943, Powderly AL- captured Baguio
Affidvit: PlSgt Edward Donald Smith, USMC, 157277, Trenton NJ- Corregidor- PI to Futase- severely beaten by "Shodanai, 2 star pvt- also beat Sgt Eckstein, Pvt Klingbeil"
Affidavit: Basil McDowell, USN, MM2c- Mooresville IN- serving as Marine when captured on Corregidor- witnessed Marine "Langston" who had clothes stolen by Chinese- beaten- outside brig three day severe cold naked.
Affidavit: GnSgt Edward D. Smith, USMC, 157277, Trenton NJ- mentions Sgt D.L. Versaw, SSgt F Boyer
Affidavit of Capt (Lt Col) Price, LaSalle CO- says 203 yanks- 72 army, 47 Navy, 84 Marines- ran camp with Capt William Henry Andrau, Dutch Air Force

Unsigned Note: Camp, on the crest of an ancient slag and rock pile, was located between the villages of Futase and Iizuka, approximately 50 miles from Moji on the north and 45 miles from Fukuoka on the west. Nakatsu, on the inland sea, was approximately 35 miles north east of Futase. Coordinates of Nakatsu are: 33.26N,131.05E.
